Filipino Parental Involvement and Children’s Educational Performance
State University of New York at Buffalo, USA
Abstract: It is widely recognized that parental involvement has a significant influence on children’s academic performance. However, little research has focused on this relationship in cultures outside of the Western context. This study examines parental involvement among a sample of parents from Mindanao, Philippines, and its impact on the school success of Filipino elementary pupils. The study reveals that Filipino parents are generally very active in their children’s school activities. However, the impact of this involvement on children’s performance varies depending on the specific type of parental involvement. The findings are interpreted within a social capital framework.
